At Brew & Grind, we regularly repair De’Longhi coffee machines with milk-frothing, water-flow and pressure-related faults. One recent repair involved a De’Longhi Eletta Cappuccino that had developed a particularly frustrating problem.

The machine could still make coffee, and at first glance the milk system appeared to work. However, once the customer started making several drinks, the problem became much clearer.

The Fault: De’Longhi Eletta Blowing Steam Instead of Milk

The customer reported that the machine would normally make the first cappuccino successfully.

When they attempted another milk-based drink, however, the machine would begin spurting or blowing steam from the milk outlet rather than properly drawing and frothing the milk.

The issue became particularly noticeable as the milk level inside the carafe became lower.

The customer had already been very thorough with cleaning, so this wasn’t simply a case of a dirty milk container or blocked external nozzle.

That meant we needed to look further inside the machine.

Initial Testing

Intermittent faults like this can sometimes be more difficult to diagnose because a machine may appear perfectly normal during its first cycle.

We therefore ran the Eletta through repeated cappuccino cycles and recreated the customer’s fault.

The first drinks were produced normally.

As testing continued, however, the machine began struggling to create enough suction through the milk system. Instead of pulling milk from the carafe and mixing it correctly with steam, steam began escaping from the milk outlet.

This pointed towards an internal pressure and suction problem rather than simply an issue with the milk carafe.

What We Found

After further testing, we traced the problem to two components within the milk and steam circuit:

Venturi System

The Venturi system is responsible for creating the suction required to draw milk from the container.

Although the system hadn’t failed completely, it was no longer operating consistently enough to maintain the correct suction.

This explained why the machine could sometimes make the first drink successfully but struggled as the milk level dropped.

Three-Way Milk Solenoid Valve

We also identified a problem with the three-way milk solenoid valve.

This valve controls the routing of steam and pressure through the milk circuit.

When it begins to wear or operate incorrectly, the machine can lose the carefully controlled pressure required for automatic milk frothing.

Combined with the Venturi fault, this was causing the Eletta to produce steam without reliably drawing milk.

The Repair

We repaired the affected milk system and replaced the defective components before thoroughly testing the machine.

Testing included:

• Multiple consecutive cappuccinos
• Milk steaming and frothing
• Testing with different milk levels in the carafe
• Checking steam pressure
• Checking milk suction
• Coffee extraction testing
• Internal leak inspection
• Cleaning and servicing of the relevant components

After the repair, the machine was once again able to draw milk consistently and produce properly textured milk throughout the entire carafe, rather than working for the first drink and then producing steam.

Why Cleaning Doesn’t Always Fix De’Longhi Milk Problems

Keeping the milk carafe and its components clean is extremely important, and blocked milk components are one of the most common causes of frothing problems.

However, if you’ve thoroughly cleaned your De’Longhi milk system and are still experiencing problems such as:

• Milk not being drawn from the container
• Steam coming out instead of milk
• Milk working for one drink but not the next
• Poor or inconsistent milk foam
• Milk spluttering from the outlet
• The machine struggling when the milk level becomes lower
• Hot milk but very little foam

…the problem may be inside the machine rather than inside the milk carafe itself.

Components such as solenoid valves, Venturi systems, seals, steam circuits and internal pressure components can all affect milk performance.
