We recently received a Sage Oracle coffee machine for repair after the customer reported that the built-in grinder had stopped working. The machine would power on, but it was no longer able to grind and dose coffee correctly, making the Oracle effectively unusable.

Diagnosing the Sage Oracle Grinder Fault

During our initial inspection, we stripped down the grinder system to identify exactly what had failed.

We found significant wear within the internal grinder mechanism. In this case, simply replacing or adjusting the burrs wouldn’t have resolved the problem. The grinder assembly itself required replacement.

Common symptoms of a failing Sage Oracle grinder can include:

• Sage Oracle not grinding coffee beans
• Grinder running but producing little or no ground coffee
• Unusual clicking, grinding or mechanical noises
• Grinder stopping during a dose
• Inconsistent grinding or dosing
• Beans remaining in the hopper despite the grinder operating

These symptoms don’t always mean the same component has failed, which is why we recommend properly diagnosing the machine before replacing parts.

Replacing the Sage Oracle Grinder Mechanism

Once the fault had been confirmed, we removed the defective grinder components and installed the replacement grinder mechanism.

The grinder was then rebuilt, adjusted and tested across multiple grind settings to make sure coffee was feeding through the system correctly.

We also tested the Oracle’s automatic grinding, dosing and tamping system to ensure the correct amount of coffee was being delivered into the portafilter.

Full Sage Oracle Service

As part of the repair, we also carried out a full internal service of the Sage Oracle.

Rather than replacing the grinder and immediately returning the machine, we inspected the rest of the system for wear, scale, leaks and developing faults.

This included inspecting and servicing the:

• Grinder and burr system
• Pumps
• Solenoid valves
• Brewing system
• Steam system
• Boilers and heating components
• Internal seals and O-rings
• Water pathways
• Group head

The machine was then cleaned, reassembled and extensively tested.

Testing the Repaired Sage Oracle

Following the repair, we ran the Sage Oracle through repeated grinding, dosing, brewing and steaming cycles.

The replacement grinder restored normal operation, with the machine once again grinding beans, automatically dosing the portafilter and preparing espresso correctly.

Another Sage Oracle repaired and returned to service rather than unnecessarily replaced.
