Sage Barista Express Repair: Everything You Need to Know

The Sage Barista Express (SES875) is one of the UK's most popular home espresso machines — and one we repair week in, week out at Brew & Grind. It's a brilliant machine, but like all precision appliances, it develops faults over time. If yours has stopped working, lost pressure, or is throwing up an error, this guide covers the most common issues we see — and how we fix them.

Most Common Sage Barista Express Faults

1. Grinder Not Working or Grinding Unevenly

The integrated grinder is the heart of the Barista Express, and it's one of the first components to show wear. Signs include:

  • Grinder making unusual noise but not dispensing coffee
  • Grounds inconsistent — too coarse or too fine regardless of setting
  • Grinder completely unresponsive

What we do: We inspect the burrs, motor, and grind sensor. Worn burrs are replaced, and we recalibrate the grind to manufacturer spec.

2. Low or No Espresso Pressure

If your shots are coming out thin, watery, or with very little crema, the most likely culprits are:

  • A worn or failing pump
  • A blocked or worn group head
  • Portafilter seal failure

What we do: Full pressure test, pump inspection and replacement where necessary, grouphead clean and seal replacement.

3. Machine Leaking Water

Leaks on the Barista Express most commonly come from:

  • The group head seal (O-ring wear)
  • The water tank housing
  • Internal solenoid valves or boiler connections

Left untreated, internal leaks can damage the electronics and cause secondary faults. We always recommend getting a leak investigated promptly.

4. Steam Wand Not Producing Steam

Weak, blocked, or completely failed steam is usually due to:

  • Limescale buildup in the steam wand or boiler
  • A faulty thermostat or heating element
  • A failed steam solenoid valve

What we do: Full descale, component testing, and replacement of any failed parts.

5. Machine Not Heating Up Properly

Underheated water produces sour, underextracted espresso. On the Barista Express, this usually points to:

  • A failing thermocoil or heating element
  • A faulty temperature sensor (thermostat)

What we do: Full thermal diagnostic, component replacement, and test pulls to confirm correct brew temperature.

6. Error Lights / Fault Codes

The Barista Express uses a series of flashing lights to indicate faults. Common error combinations we diagnose and resolve include:

  • All lights flashing — temperature fault or failed thermocoil
  • Steam light flashing — steam boiler or sensor fault
  • Clean/descale light on — blocked internals or failed probe

If your machine is displaying unfamiliar flashing lights, don't ignore them — they're the machine telling you something needs attention.

7. Machine Tripping the Fuse or Not Powering On

Electrical faults on the Barista Express are less common but do happen, particularly in older machines. Causes include a blown internal fuse, damaged power board, or failed power switch.

What we do: Full electrical diagnostic, fuse and board inspection, and safe repair or component replacement.

Is It Worth Repairing a Sage Barista Express?

Almost always, yes. The SES875 retails for between £599 and £749 new. A professional repair at Brew & Grind will typically cost a fraction of that — and with the right fix, your machine will perform as well as it did when you first bought it.

We always give you an honest quote before any work is carried out. If a repair isn't economically sensible, we'll tell you — but in our experience, most Barista Express faults are very fixable.
